FIELD ENGINEER SAFETY & SECURITY AT FERMILAB

Safety Training
In order to ensure the safety of our subcontractors, Fermilab asks that on-site vendor field engineers** attend the following training course. Designed to give the FE a broad background in safety here at at the lab, the course is the same two and a half hour seminar that is required of all new Fermilab employees.

The seminar, course #FN000034/CR/00 NEW EMPLOYEE ES&H  (Environment, Safety, and Health) ORIENTATION, is held every Monday at 1:00pm on the 15th floor of the high-rise.  The following training is included; General Employee Radiation Training (GERT), Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), Hazard Communication (HAZCOM), and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) training.  In addition, general Fermilab emergency procedures and policies are discussed.  In addition to providing the FE with a broad background in Fermilab safety policies, it also provides information that will assist the FE in recognizing potential safety issues that may be encountered.

Verification of class schedules and registration for this course can be done through the ES&H web page located at http://www-esh.fnal.gov/pls/default/class_sched.html (a Fermilab ID# is required).  Registration can also be done through Joel Kofron at 630-840-8444.

Because the seminar only provides GERT training, it does not prepare the individual to go into radiation restricted areas. A special course and badge process are required to access these areas. On the rare occasion that a field engineer would have to enter one of these areas, a temporary access process is in place.  The procedure for gaining temporary access can be found at Procedure for Entering Radiation Restricted Areas.

** Field engineers who are only at the lab on occasion can attend the new Sub-Contractor Orientation.  The class is an abbreviated version of the New Employee Orientation.  At the class the field engineer simply watches a video and is given pamphlets to read.   The class takes about a 1/2 hour and is held in the ES&H Training Room (WH Ground Floor) at the following times:

  • Monday through Friday - 7:30 am

If the field engineer is unable to attend the class at one of these times they should contact Jack MacNerland at the Feynman Computing Center (x2865). He also has the video and pamphlets and will allow people to view it from his office.

Field Engineers may also be asked to attend other training (including lab stand downs), which the lab may deem necessary.

General Safety
Safety at Feynman - For instructions on what to do in the event that there is a fire or severe weather while working at the Feynman Computing Center, FE's should review the following URL:  http://cdinternal.fnal.gov/esh/fcc_emergency_plan.htm.

Safety at Fermilab - For information regarding safety at Fermilab you can refer to the ES&H home page

Security
Field Engineers working at the lab are expected to comply with all Fermilab policies regarding site and computer security.

ID's - Field Engineers who have been issued a Fermilab ID are expected to keep their ID current.  If an ID is allowed to expire, entry into areas that have card readers will be prohibited.  If discovered by security personnel, expired ID's will be confiscated.  If an ID has expired or is due to expire, the FE should contact cdmaint@fnal.gov or the Fermilab contract coordinator to arrange to have their ID renewed.

Computer Security - All Fermilab employees and subcontractors are required to read and comply with the Fermilab Policy on Computing.
