VME64xP (VIPA) SUBRACK EMI ISSUES

There are 2 EMI gaskets that users may wish to install to reduce EMI effects near the subrack.  ESD has a supply of the spring metal EMI gaskets for installation on subracks.  Users can request these by e-mailing or calling one of the following ESD personnel:

    Adam Walters X-2696
    Carl Schirtzinger X-5805
    Mike James X-4755
    Mike Behnke X-2700
    PREP Management X-2688
Due to the fragile nature of the EMI gasket material, these gaskets must be picked up at the PREP Customer Service Window on the 3rd floor of the Feynman Computer Center.  ESD will not send these gaskets out via the laboratory mail system at this time.

Installation of the gaskets does not require removal of the subrack from the relay rack, or the EMI gasket support rails from the subrack.

The EMI gaskets are installed on the EMI gasket support rails nearest Slot 1 at the front of the subrack and Slot 21 at the rear.

The gasket is installed with the flat portion against the side panel of the subrack.

If an EMI gasket is to be installed at the slot 1 position, please contact one of the above persions to procure the support rail.  Due to the location of the mounting screws, installation of this rail requires the partion removal of the subrack from the relay rack.

The top edge of be gasket should be parallel with the center of the top screw in the EMI gasket support rail.

Slowly work the gasket onto the retaining strip from the top down, ensuring there are no kinks in the gasket as it is installed.  It may be nessecary to use a small blunt ended object to seat the gasket into the gasket retaining strip.  A slight click may be heard when each section of the gasket locks into the gasket support rail.

Once installed, even partially, the gaskets are extremely difficult to remove without destroying or severely damaging them.
